Allergic to Life by Kathryn C. Treat
I have a special interest in reading Kathryn’s story because of my own struggles with health issues. And so when I met her on twitter and read her biography I immediately connected to it, and had to buy the book out of curiosity.
I finished reading Allergic to Life on December 14, 2013, and it was drama from beginning to end. I kept wondering how Kathryn kept the presence of mind to write all this stuff down. It was amazing to me because she went through so many life-threatening reactions to her environment. The average person would not have had that in their mind to do.
The only time I did start to write my own journal was after the doctor told me to start writing down everything that I was eating so we could figure out what was wrong.
I could relate to all of the author’s issues and to some degree the way her body reacted. Any allergic reaction can be serious if you cannot find a treatment to stop it.
Kathryn took us step by step through the start of her reactions right through to the end point and the medications she had to use to stop them. I felt like I was going through it with her, because she described it so vividly. I got angry with the bad doctors she had to endure and felt relief that she found some sensible doctors who could take care of her. That’s because I’ve done that too. It’s scary when the medical establishment becomes the culprit in your life struggle to survive. I personally feel that the medical field needs to be overhauled.
Anybody that has been through a little bit of what Kathryn has endured can relate to some degree her story and pain. I couldn’t stop reading and was able to cover so much ground. The chapters are easy to get through and the writing style was simple and to-the-point. That made it relaxing to read while she took us on a wild ride of a lifetime.
I was especially glad that she found a doctor who started her on probiotic supplements to put back the good bacteria and help her immune system get stronger. That is exactly what saved me in my own situation. I am on Ortho Biotics, vitamin supplements and minerals. I take them religiously every day. I can no longer tolerate regular drugs because I get every side effect coming and going. I recently developed an abscess on my tooth and tried penicillin because I was so afraid of antibiotics. With the Ortho Biotic supplement I was able to tolerate the penicillin.
Kudos that Kathryn finally won her settlement in court for all the horrendous medical bills she incurred just trying to stay alive. I’m glad she didn’t let the system pull one over on her because red tape is the norm. She kept good records and that puts her one step ahead every single time. She is a fighter and only fighters win.
Thank you Kathryn for sharing your plight with us. That’s the only way people will get educated to what is happening to our environment.
I recommend this book to anybody who wants to become knowledgeable about the medical system in this country and the dangers lurking at every turn.
May She Rest in Peace!

What a wonderful review, Shirley! I’m looking forward to reading this as well. I’m certain I haven’t gone through the degree of suffering outlined in this book, but I do have severe allergies (was told I’m in the upper 5% globally). I suspect there are things in my own house I’m allergic to because I’m always worse when home. (Yes I keep a very clean house…always eliminating dust since dust mites are one of my worse allergens.) Kathryn, I know you’ve been through a lot, and I’m very sorry about this…but my sense is that you and your book will end up helping many, many people. My best to you both. 🙂

Thank you Danica. It is truly amazing how many have severe allergies and sensitivities. And we are just the “tip of the iceberg”. As more and more chemicals are being introduced into our world, there will be many many more of us.

Kathryn, now that I’m reading this review again, I hope I didn’t spill too much of the story. Since forming our book club I have become more conscious of that and don’t want to give away too much before people get a chance to buy the book.

Yes Danica I did this way before we started Rave Reviews. I wanted Kathryn to know how much her book meant to me and to show her some support. And then Rave Reviews came alone. So the timing was not in sync. When Kathryn’s book comes up for review I will be ready to comment. Allergic to Life is a good read.

I too have suffered from environmental sensitivities after being poisoned by pesticides – and only natural healing approaches have helped me. I look forward to reading Kathryn’s book and reviewing it as well on Becca’s Inspirational Book Blog.

Becca, your comment leads me to the conclusion that we all need to crusade against pesticides (I eat organic vegetables & fruits) and processed meats because ingesting these foods are detrimental to our overall health as a human race. Kathryn’s case was extreme but we are all paying a price one way or another by what we eat and breathe. Thanks Becca for sharing your story with us..

OOps my mistake. Between the comments and replying by email I goofed on Kathryn’s reply to Becca and thought she was talking to me.
How crazy is that?
