Poetry Excerpt from Bound: The Lost Romanticism and Eroticism of Gay Men:
Questions We Cannot Answer
Have you ever run into a friend at the park or in a mall?
You noticed they are saddened and distraught about the world around them
Then they ask, “Do you believe in god?”
Dumbfounded and puzzled, you are only ably to reply with a quick and overly simplistic, “yes”
Of course, to make things more contemplative that very same friend has to go further with this question
I am trapped in the religiosity of my past and upbringing
You know what I mean when you are asked “How do you know?
Is there really a God?
And what do they look like?
Is it the great goddess of the moonlight, mother earth?
Is it the father Abraham and his son he almost sacrificed like a lamb in the fields waiting for a wolf to pounce and devour him?
Is it the Buddha we are told where you meditate for the hopes of enlightenment and in some cultures, rub the pseudo statue of Buddha himself striving to gain good luck?
Let’s say this friend is a homosexual
You know, gay, queer, lesbian, faggot, dyke, I’m sure you used these words to identify someone who was different natured once or twice in your lifetime
There is the question about “God’s Love” and all of its blessings and unconditional contentment
However, if you were plagued with “the gay”, most religious factions around the world, you have a different identity, you are a monster, deviant, non-human
What about the lost soul of someone with mental illness?
They look at you vacant and unable to catch the world that is seemingly spinning to fast from them
No matter how fast they run after their dreams or happiness, they say you are guaranteed, only if this world of make believe and…
And….
And……………………….
AND……
Ever look into their eyes and see darkness or pain and release tears behind a smile to mask their misery or reclusive spirit?
With a cryptic sigh, I watch the world crumble around us, but see a world that is ever changing with new light, hope, and healing energy
About the Author:
Forrest Robert Stepnowski is an advocate, a writer, a social worker, and a performance artist in the Pacific Northwest. He has been writing poetic works and prose for most of his life. He realized how important is to share his work with others who have dealt with similar pathways of self-hate, self-deprecation, and self-loathing in the hopes they find they are not alone, as well as help them realize they are not deviants, nor are they against “human nature.” They are part of a collective of misfit toys on an island where being different is beautiful. We all have a voice, and the world should hear it. Forrest is a proud member of Rave Reviews Book Club.

What a insightful post, Forrest! Yes. I do see this when I look into their eyes. That hidden pain and confusion. And yes there is always hope that we can choose instead.

Another incredibly poignant post from Forrest. There is a lot of raw honesty in this piece. Can we all read it and declare we never did any of the things Forrest lists? This is beautiful writing! Thank you for sharing, Shirley!
