ABUSE
(inspired by The Button and This Second Chance)
You’ve been called stupid and ugly many times—it still hurts.
The words wound you deeper than any hit or punch.
Each slicing remark cuts deep into your soul.
It disfigures you until you are as twisted as the abusers.
No one is there to tell you that you are loved.
That you are beautiful—you are wanted.
Instead, the ignorant utterances hit you faster than a fist.
Each day you have one less tear to cry…
Until one day the tears are finally gone.
Numbness replaces the pain and you’re locked safely inside.
Your walls thick and strong until one day…
Someone reaches out to you and you push them away.
They don’t leave. Instead they show you kindness.
Slowly you replace the numbness with pain, then healing…
With that caring someone who’ll accept your unshed tears.
This is what’s been missing in your past: love and acceptance.
They fill the hole left by abuse, leaving only your beauty.

D. L. Finn is an independent California local who encourages everyone to embrace their inner child. She was born and raised in the foggy Bay Area, but in 1990 she relocated with her husband, kids, dogs, and cats to Nevada City, in the Sierra foothills. She immersed herself in reading all types of books but especially loved romance, horror, and fantasy. She always treasured creating her own reality on paper. If it weren’t for mosquitoes, I would love to live in a forest, or at least by the edge of one. This poem is very powerful, Denise. So many people are just craving love and acceptance. And those are two things we can all give freely and so easily.

There us a lot of mosquitoes in the summer thats for sure, Yvette. They are pests! Love and acceptance can go a long way to healing that heart. Tanks,

I grew up in the suburbs and had all that city life offered, but I always felt something was missing….trees:) The city isn’t too far away but I found my peace here. Only downsude is fire Seasons

This is such a deep poem, Denise. It fits so many of our wounded characters in our stories. They build the walls for protection only to have them slowly dissolved by love. Just beautiful. Thank you, Shirley, for hosting today!
