DAY 3 FLASH FICTION
I enjoy writing Flash Fiction as I do in this writing challenge that I participate in. It helps me tighten up my writing and grow my vocabulary. It took me some while to get my very first win. In fact, it was the middle of December 2016, and I was writing on my Mac when the email notification came in. I stared at it, thinking, what is this all about. I then opened the email. I must have sat there at least twenty minutes not quite believing that it had happened. I had reached the first level.
I compare my life to walking up steps. Sometimes the steps are wide, and I stop and rest for a while, and learned something new so that I can continue to move further. Sometimes the steps are very narrow, and I have to keep moving because there’s nowhere to stop and rest. These are the stressful times. So, I had been competing in this challenge for at least three years and I was wavering, asking myself if I should continue. I didn’t think my writing was improving.
The competition is always stiff. The writers who participate are authors who are self-published or belong to a traditional publishing house. Some of the authors are hybrid. So, the email notification shocked for me. I sat at my desk and cried. Then, I shared it with my husband.
Regardless of what I write The Woman and Her Dream and Turn The Light On will always be cherished because they were the first in the categories, Flash Fiction and Short Stories to be published.

The Woman and Her Dream by Pat Garcia
The ocean waves rippled under the woman‘s belly. They tickled her stomach, gently. The red rays in the heaven signalled the ending of the day. Though she couldn’t tell where the day began or where it ended. Unending was time. The reddish orange tint spread itself out upon the ocean. The width and breadth of its streams amazed her.
She lay on the atop of the ocean and observed the cold blooded mammals in the deep. Water drops touched her hair and ran down both of her temples. She gazed out into the vastness. Coming her way was a giant six-legged cirrata. Its arms splattering water as it moved toward her.
The strange singsong squawking of the eagle above her lulled her mind. Had she finally made it? She opened her eyes and turned over to watch the giant bird’s approach. The roar of the waves became stronger. A blue-black fin sticking up out of the ocean was gliding in her direction. A smile crossed her face; she should have known this was the way it would be. Embedded in nature, surrounded by water, the inner peace she sought overtook her, and she sighed and stretched her legs.

Pat Garcia can’t remember a day when she didn’t desire to write. At the age of three, Pat wrote her first story. No one could understand it because she hadn’t learned to write. So, she read the scribble on her paper to whoever would listen. Born in Blythe, Georgia, (USA), she is also a musician, singer, and songwriter and has released five CDs.

Thanks, Shirley, for hosting Pat. I always enjoy Pat’s writing, as well as her comments and questions during RRBC’s events. I can identify with her analogy of writing and steps. Sometimes as authors we need rest and sometimes we can sprint up those steps. If I could, I’d hop on a plane today and fly to Germany so that I could take Pat out to lunch!
