The $3.49 E-book fiasco! #RRBC #RRBCEyesOnTheBook w/guest @RobertaEaton17 @RRBC_Org

Through the Nethergate by Roberta Eaton Cheadle was purchased by me after participating in “Rave Waves Eyes on The Book Show” hosted by our President Nonnie Jules with guest, Robbie Cheadle. The show aired on October 8, 2022 and was really enjoyable.

Unfortunately for me, the purchase didn’t download successfully. It was on the Lulu page. Perhaps Robbie, being from the UK, was having a difficult time getting an ebook created on Amazon. Perhaps not. All I know is I am out $3.49 and can’t retrieve the download. Their instructions suck. If you are a techie, you may have better luck. On top of that, they do not issue refunds on eBooks.

Buying is not for the faint of heart at Lulu’s!

My suggestion for Robbie is, “Do not utilize this company or you will lose goodwill among your readers.” I decided to let it go even though it could have been resolved through my credit card company.

I was so looking forward to reading this ebook as it sounds like an exciting read. Here is the blurb:

Margaret, a girl born with second sight, has the unique ability to bring ghosts trapped between Heaven and Hell back to life. When her parents die suddenly, she goes to live with her beloved grandfather, but the cellar of her grandfather’s ancient inn is haunted by an evil spirit of its own. In the town of Bungay, a black dog wanders the streets, enslaving the ghosts of those who have died unnatural deaths. When Margaret arrives, these phantoms congregate at the inn, hoping she can free them from the clutches of Hugh Bigod, the 12th century ghost who has drawn them away from Heaven’s White Light in his canine guise. With the help of her grandfather and the spirits she has befriended, Margaret sets out to defeat Hugh Bigod, only to discover he wants to use her for his own ends – to take over Hell itself.

Now you can see why the book got my attention. I will not be trying to buy from Lulu in the future. They must come up with a better way to service their customers or they will lose them.

Perhaps you’d like to share your own stories or make a beneficial comment. Anything that can help all of us make better decisions so that we don’t waste our money.

About Shirley Harris-Slaughter

I love old buildings and history. That's why I ended up writing about the history that surrounded me all of my life - "Our Lady of Victory, the Saga of an African-American Catholic Community." Plus our church had closed and the school is torn down, so I felt it was imperative that we preserve the history or it would be lost forever.

  1. Shirley, I was so sorry to hear that you had this experience. The part that bothered me most is they don’t offer refunds. Talk about bad business (that is, if you want mine).

Although it was a small amount, it’s still the principal behind the fact that you utilized their service, with nothing to show for it in the end except a huge headache. Thankfully the author, Robbie Cheadle (who lives way across the water), offered to mail you a paperback copy! THAT’S EVEN BETTER IN MY BOOK.

But, I have noticed from the other comments that you were able to retrieve Robbie’s book after all. Is that correct? If so, I’d notify Robbie so she isn’t out of the expense of mailing from S. Africa.

Good luck, Shirley, and thanks for opening our eyes to the NO REFUNDS OFFERED practice at LuLu.

I have been in touch with Robbie and did tell her I got it finally, thanks to her offer.

Thank goodness for John’s help as well. I learned something new and valuable behind all of this.

Never an ill will where it doesn’t blow some good. 👍

John, on top of all this ebook business, I changed carriers and was without service for 24 hours and up. I sent the file to kindle email address and the uploading stalled because of internet connection. Eventually it uploaded and there it was. Took about another 24 hours but it did upload.

    Hi Shirley,
I hope you received my comment. In the first sentence, I spelled the verb won’t wrongly.
It should be I won’t instead of I want.
Would you please correct it for me?
    Thank you.

    Good Morning, Shirley,
Well, I won’t be buying the book from Lulu. I have used them only once, and there were a lot of steps to downloading the book, so I decided I have enough headaches with technology and I don’t need to add to that.
I hope you do get your copy or a refund since the mistake is on the side of Lulu. If they are not willing to refund, I consider that as not being customer friendly. And if there customer service is lousy, then they won’t see me trying to order from them.
I’m so sorry this happen to you. It is a pain that you don’t need.
    All the best.
    Shalom aleichem

Something sure changed over the past months as the Kindle version is no longer available. Since you have a Kindle Fire, you should also have an email address for it so you can download files electronically. If Robbie sends you a PDF version via email then you can forward it to your Kindle Fire via its email address. Good luck!

If Robbie responds here, I will ask her to send me a pdf version and try to retrieve it there.

John, what do you mean by kindle’s email address. All my emails can be picked up through my email account. Do I go on Amazon devices and find an email address there? Just wondering.

Shirley, if you registered your Kindle when first using it, you should have an email address. Open your Kindle and slide your finger from top of the screen downard, it should open a window where you’ll see a gear. Touch it for another drop-down menu. On it, choose ‘my account’ to see your Kindle email address. SO…you can read any file on your Kindle that you send as an attachment to that address. If you never registered, you can do so when you open the ‘my account’ file. I hope this helps.

Well, you learn something new every day. I did register my kindle fire and did find the email address. I know about email address for my kindle and dropped files there in the past.

When I hear from Robbie, I will ask her to send me a pdf file to forward to the address I have.

          Thank you so much.

            Hi Shirley.

Did you forward Robbies email with the attachment to your Kindle email account? You should then expect an email from Amazon asking you to confirm that you want to do that. Once approved you should see the file in your library where your other books are. It won’t have the book cover photo but will be a pdf file with the book title. Double click on the file to open and read. Enjoy!

Hi Shirley! I can sympathize with you as the same has happened to me in the past. I did read Robbie’s book and bought it on Amazon for my Kindle. I have stayed away from Lulu since day one. Ask Robbie to send you a version in PDF which would allow you to read it anywhere. Do you have a Kindle?

I went to amazon and all I saw were paperbacks. Anyway, if Robbie sees this post, she will probably respond to me. I do have a kindle and a kindle fire. I don’t understand why my only option was Lulu.
