DAY 30

What To Do Now!

Connie is staying in my spare bedroom. We are going to see our brother Melvin and tell him about our sister. As you may recall, I am my brother’s guardian to protect him and his assets. His case manager feels that he should be told in person and not over the phone.

So that is the plan!

I am enjoying having Connie here as she is my favorite sister. I can relate to her on a whole different positive level. And we are more alike in so many ways.

Arrangements are being made and the funeral moved back a week to get all the family here.

You, my RRBC family, have been on this roller coaster with me for 30 days. You have been praying for me and my family throughout and I love each and every one of you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

We are going through old photos and going down memory lane. Connie’s son is going to do a collage of the family. He is a chef and doesn’t work for a restaurant since the pandemic He promotes himself through social media.

I don’t have much more to share today so saying goodbye until the next time.

About Shirley Harris-Slaughter

I love old buildings and history. That's why I ended up writing about the history that surrounded me all of my life - "Our Lady of Victory, the Saga of an African-American Catholic Community." Plus our church had closed and the school is torn down, so I felt it was imperative that we preserve the history or it would be lost forever.

    Hi, Shirley,
I’m happy to hear that you are not alone during this time of bereavement. I so agree that it is not good to tell this kind of news over the phone. Sometimes, according to the circumstances, it cannot be avoided, but when it can be avoided, the best is to tell them in person. You and Connie are carrying each other and that is also good to hear. Walking through this with you has given me a hunger to see my family, this year. We talk every week through Zoom but I can’t wait to hug on them and we hug a lot.
    Take care.

  4. Dear Shirley, I’m so glad your sister, Connie, can be with you. Going through pictures may be cathartic for you as you process the difficult time Joyce and those who love her have been through. May you and your family find peace as you lay her to rest. You were brave to stick with the blogging challenge through all this and deserve congratulations!

Praying for you as you and Connie share the news with your brother, Shirley. There’s nothing like have close family members with you during a time of loss. I know how healing it is to recall shared memories and to laugh and cry together. Asking God to wrap His arms around you all. God bless you!
